DNA Frees Man after 27 years in Texas Prison
James Lee Woodard was released on April 29, 2008.
Woodard had been convicted of the 1980 rape and murder of his girlfriend. Information that she was with three other men near the time of her death was never disclosed to the defense and never thoroughly investigated. Woodard could have been paroled, but refused to admit to a crime he did not commit. The judge who released him said that "spoke volumes" about his character. Woodard is the 17th man in Dallas County Texas to be released after DNA testing. Dallas County has had more DNA exonerations than any other county in the Nation! He has little family, and his mother died while he was in prison. Woodard is one of the many people freed after a wrongful conviction who needs help with getting his life started again.
