The Pony Express Trail - 23.49 miles of it!
Wow, what a trail it was.
On Wednesday, I walked and ran along the Pony Express Tail. I made it to North of Silver Gate until there was no more room on the side of the road to walk. There was a lot of traffic traveling fast and no shoulder with the mountain on one side extending straight up and a 1,500 foot drop on th other side. My friends from Golden Spoke Bike Shop had told me that it would be impossible to walk it, and they were right. The bypass for bike and pedestrian travel is still closed by the U.S. Dept. of Natural Resources, so I could not take the Emigrant Pass either. We packed up Bob and carted him across 22.9 miles, which I will make up in New York City when I get there. I ended the day in Meyers - a 9 hour and 18 minute day. Much of the day was spent stepping aside and waiting for cars to pass so that Bob and I didn't get run over or pushed off the mountain. I also wanted to say thank you to the people who I saw along the way - many of whom had seen the news story on CBS and the newspaper articles. It is the highlight of my day and I always appreciate the kindness and words of cheer and encouragement. Side Note: This is being written a day late, because the motel last night did not have internet service. Finally, I'm still looking for volunteers to pick up and drop off along Route 50 in Nevada.
